Residential Life Medical Accommodations
最新天美传媒 (JU) is committed to ensuring all students have鈥痚quitable鈥痑ccess to campus housing. These guidelines鈥痚stablish鈥痶he process for requesting and implementing housing accommodations for students with disabilities,鈥痠n accordance with鈥疉DA, Section 504, Florida Statue 760.27, and University policy. The Residential Life process does not encompass any academic accommodations.
Housing accommodations are intended to remove disability-related barriers and allow equal participation in residential life while鈥痬aintaining鈥痮perational feasibility.鈥疐or example, A single room can be approved when a student鈥檚 medical provider shows that their disability makes it hard鈥攐r impossible鈥攖o share a room, such as when they need extra space鈥痜or ADA accessibility purposes鈥痮r certain room features to use medical equipment safely.
However, common diagnoses like ADHD, anxiety, or depression typically do not create the level of access issues that would require a single room, so these requests are not typically approved unless there is鈥痑dditional鈥痠nformation showing a substantial impact on housing access.鈥疘f your needs do not amount to disability or access barrier, but you still believe you need support, please contact our office at鈥痟ousing@ju.edu鈥痶o discuss your request.
Examples of Housing Accommodations:
- Accessible rooms or bathrooms (wheelchair access, roll-in showers)鈥
- Visual or auditory alert systems鈥
- Ground-floor or elevator access鈥
- Private or semi-private room when medically necessary鈥
- Access to kitchen facilities for dietary or medical needs鈥
Medical Accommodations
During our traditional housing periods, all requests are reivewed on a monthly basis via committee.
To apply for a Residential Medical Accommodation, documentation must be filled out
by a licensed medical processional and provided to the JU student. The student should
submit the documentation and any other pertinent information directly to Residential
Life through the Medical Accommodation submission portal found above.
Forms must be completed in their entirety. All requests for Residential Life Medical
Accommodations are reviewed by a Professional staff committee. Residential Life reserves
the right to request updated information, deny incomplete documentation, and conduct
a yearly accommodation renewal process.
The student will receive confirmation of received documents from the Residential Life Office initiating the Accommodation Review Process.
Reasons for rejection:
- Lacking documentation to support request for accommodation
- Documentation was not hand written my medical provider
- Student's current placement or living arrangement fulfills Medical Provider's Recommendation
- Student did not fully participate in the Accommodation requests process
When Accommodations are approved:
- Students will receive an email to their JU email address with confirmation of their submission, and email correspondence once the committee has completed their review of the documentation.
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)- Requests for the Academic Year are OPEN
The Office of Residential Life reviews all Emotional Support Animal or ESA applications. Any ESA questions can be directed to Residential Life at housing@ju.edu.
Please keep in mind: Any approval covers 1-animal per student if the animal changes for any reason, the student needs to start the approval process again with a new submission. Any unapproved animal on campus will result in Student Conduct involvement. ESAs must be approved before animal is brought to campus. Animals brought to campus prior to ESA approval may result in a denial of the application. ESA applications are reviewed on a weekly basis.
Before submitting an application, please review the Residential Life ESA Policies. If approved, students will review the policies and discuss the expectations of living with an animal in their community with their Community Leader.
Any animal that is referenced in the ESA packet must be AT LEAST 9 months at the time of the request.
If a student was approved for an ESA in the previous year, they will need to participate in the renewal process managed by Residential Life starting in Mid-May for the upcoming academic year. Email housing@ju.edu for more information!
